Deputy Director: Palliative Care (Re-Advertisement)

Nexia SAB&T seeks to appoint a dynamic individual  on a fixed term contract to  strengthen palliative care services across all levels of the health system on a fixed term contract in Pretoria. 


Responsibilities & Duties 

  1. To review and update the National Policy Framework and Strategy on Palliative Care 2017 – 2022 (NPFSPC); 
  2. To assist in the formulation of provincial palliative care task teams; and facilitate the development of a User Guide for Children and clinical Guidelines for adults; 
  3. To strengthen palliative care services across all levels of the health system from the tertiary hospital to the patient in the home to provide integrated and equitable care; 
  4. To ensure adequate numbers of appropriately trained health care providers to deliver palliative care at all levels of the health service; 
  5. Establish and maintain systems for monitoring and evaluation of South Africa’s palliative care program; 
  6. Ensure appropriate allocation of financial resources to strengthen and sustain South Africa’s palliative care program; and 
  7. Strengthen governance and leadership to support implementation of the policy. 


Qualification, Skills, Competencies & Experience: 


  1. Bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences or Social Work relevant to palliative care (post graduate qualifications in Palliative care would be advantageous); 
  2. Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in Palliative care  
  3. To demonstrate working experience in: 
  4. Initiating and managing projects; 
  5. Facilitating meeting; 
  6. Managing people; 
  7. Monitoring and evaluation. 
  8. Good Knowledge of paediatric palliative care in addition to adult palliative care; 
  9. Good analytical skills and ability to think strategically; 
  10. Ability to work independently and as part of a team; 
  11. Good interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships; 
  12. Valid drivers license and willingness to travel and work overtime; 
  13. Good understanding and knowledge of functioning of health systems is essential; 
  14. Good understanding of models of palliative care service delivery; 
  15. Good understanding and knowledge of public sector health system; and 
  16. Good communication skills and able to speak African languages.
