The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences Schools Enrichment Centre (AIMSSEC), in Muizenberg, Cape Town, invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced candidates for the position of Mathematics Education Lecturer (Intermediate Phase) . This is a part - time, two - year contract, with a possibility of extension, depending on performance and availability of outside funding.
About AIMSSEC:
Since its inception in 2003 AIMSSEC’s focus has been on teacher professional development, running a variety of blended-learning courses for in-service mathematics teachers and teacher trainers concentrating on deepening Technological-Pedagogical-Content Knowle dge (TPACK) and introducing effective teaching strategies suitable for the 21st century. AIMSSEC is building capacity t o meet the urgent need for upgrading of teachers’ subject, pedagogical and educational technology knowledge and skills, and the pressing demand from teachers for professional development. Many teachers with no mathematical qualifications are required to teach mathematics. These teachers must be trained and upskilled to become proficient mathematics teachers to give young learners in South Africa their entitlement to a good mathematical education. Teachers everywhere require lifelong learning to keep up to date with content knowledge, teaching techniques and the changing demands of the world of work . AIMSSEC offers Mathematics Subject Leader Training courses through distance learning to empower teachers who, in turn, will train other teachers.

Duties
- Design, develop and write distance-learning study materials (mathematics, and didactics) for SACE Endorsed professional development courses for Intermediate Phase teachers (grades 4 to 6) including, but not limited to, the sequence of seven AIMSSEC professional development courses. Note that only four of these courses are offered in any one year.
1.1 Mathematical Thinking ( MT ).
1.2 Mathematical Communication and Language ( MCL ).
1.3 Differentiation and Inclusion in the Mathematics Classroom ( DIMC ).
1.4 Mathematics Skills and Competences for Employment ( MSCE ).
1.5 Conceptual Development and Progression ( CDP ).
1.6 Action Research ( AR ) .
1.7 Subject Leadership ( SL ), Training Future Leaders in Mathematics
Education.
1.8 Any new courses that might be developed.
2. Delivery lectures, seminars, and tutorials in contact sessions and online.
3.Support and advise students including online support.
4.Assess coursework and assignments for the distance-learning courses.
5.Supervise students Action Research and train them to run self-help workshops for other teachers.
6. Carry out the duties of an examiner for partner universities.
7. Undertake administrative tasks related to AIMSSEC projects, such as theorganisation of residential courses, timetabling and student admissions,
induction programmes and involvement in committees and boards.
8. Represent the institution at professional conferences and seminars and
contribute to these as necessary.
9. Undertake continuous professional development (CPD) and participate in staff
training activities.
10. Develop and implement new methods of teaching, using multimedia
technologies and e-learning, in response to research and development in
mathematics education in the intermediate phase.
11. Assist with evaluation of the courses/programme.
Desirable but not essential duties
1. Undertake personal research projects and actively contribute to the
institution’s research profile.
2. Establish collaborative links outside the institution with industrial, commercial
and public organisations.
3. Undertake publicity tasks by providing news items for the AIMS newsletter and
quarterly AIMSSEC newsletter and annual brochure.
Requirements:
Applicants must provide evidence of the following. Claims by applicants that they can meet the requirements are not sufficient.
- At least four years relevant experience in mathematics teaching in schools including two years in some leadership and management capacity.
- At least four years relevant experience of teaching on professional development courses for mathematics teachers and in supporting the teaching of mathematics in schools.
- Excellent interpersonal and relational competencies.
- High level of professional engagement in teacher education and curriculum development.
- High level of computer proficiency as appropriate to school mathematics.
- Excellent writing and oral communication skills.
- Flexibility and willingness to work after hours and on weekends when necessary.
- Willingness to travel.
- A valid unendorsed South African driver's license and own transport.
Advantageous:
- Experience of conducting research in mathematics education.
- Proficiency in information communication systems.
- Proficiency in additional languages such as isiZulu, and/ isiXhosa, and / or Afrikaans.
- Enthusiasm to work in a culturally diverse organisation .
- Has done voluntary work (in any capacity).
Non-South African citizens must have (or obtain) a valid South African work permit or be a permanent resident.
