About Bonnievale 418

After the successful community-led implementation of a new skills-based high school in Bonnievale (Jakes Gerwel Technical), the Bonnievale 418 programme has been established to pursue a broader mission to invest in the lives of young people by increasing  quality and access to career-focused education, supporting learner pathways from school to work, growing employment potential within the local economy and sharing learnings with other communities”. The programme has the ambitious goal of zero youth unemployment in the local community by 2030.

Bonnievale 418 is funded by the JGE Funding Trust, a dedicated and diverse group of community members who share a deeply held belief that every young person should have the opportunity to participate fully in learning and in life regardless of means or ability.

Job overview

The Year 13 Stream Lead will establish this new department in Bonnievale418 with the focus on placing school leavers without a post school opportunity (Study or employment) into various youth development programs. These programs include amongst others the Year Beyond program, Chrysalis Academy applications, the Year 13 programme and the Adult Education and Training programme. This person will work very closely with the Pathway and Employment Managers to optimise the links between supply (learners/ school leavers) and demand (employment or other income generating opportunities).

The position is based in Bonnievale, Western Cape.

Key responsibilities

  1. Identifying local (and regional):
  2. Managing a team of implementers and mentors of programmes.
  3. Compiling of reports and the managing of programme budgets.
  4. Developing post-school placement strategy: placement opportunities based on learner profiles and market demand.
  5. Maintain 80% placement in programmes, with the aim of facilitating the progression of candidates into other opportunities upon completion. 
  6. Developing a youth database to track supported youth to enable follow-up support, monitoring and evaluation, and feedback from youth.

Minimum requirements

  1. Fluent in English and Afrikaans, with excellent listening skills and speaking skills.
  2. Proven ability to work with people who are dealing with stressful and difficult situations.
  3. Strong interpersonal skills, to work with different types of people and to find meaningful connections to young school leavers.
  4. Course facilitating skills.
  5. Strong managerial skills (various youth development programs implemented by support staff).
  6. Experience in youth development.
  7. A valid driver’s license with own reliable transport.

Education and experience profile

  1. Tertiary qualification in counselling or related field with a focus on career development.
  2. At least 2 years’ experience in youth development, facilitating of programs and recruitment and job placements,

Employment Type: 3-year contract position – with a possible extension
