Amid a huge backlash about WhatsApp’s updated terms and conditions, head Will Carthcart responded on 8 Friday with a twitter thread attempting to explain away what the terms of use mean and who they will impact.
The updated terms and conditions, which go into effect on the 8th February, said that users should be aware of, and consent to the fact that WhatsApp will data with Facebook. Users who refuse to consent would cease to use the app, the message said.
This announcement caused an uproar among WhatsApp users globally, even on the African continent, with many users vowing to move to other messaging apps such as Telegram.
“It’s important for us to be clear that this update describes business communication and does not affect WhatsApp’s data sharing practices with Facebook. It does not impact how people communicate privately with friends or family wherever they are in the world,” Carthcart said on his twitter thread.
