Yatsar is a Christian centre / safe haven for people dealt a severe blow by life, who deserve another chance to take up their rightful place in society again as fully restored individuals. The centre provides accommodation, food clothing and counselling if necessary. Yatsar’s primary goal is to help the people to regain self-esteem to help themselves and then in turn be able to help others.
In its 20 years of existence since 1993, Yatsar still do not believe in street collections as it strive not to encourage that behaviour, but to keep itself productively occupied, as the Word says. In 1996 the organisation applied to the Pretoria City Council to rent a house with the motivation that the house would be used to house homeless persons. The Council offered to sell the property to Yatsar at a reasonable price and to pay it off over a period of five years. In 1998/99, Yatsar succeeded in a bid to rent another property from the Pretoria City Council, which would be exclusively used to provide accommodation for homeless persons. In 2000, Yatsar was registered as a nonprofit organisation (NPO) and applied for assistance from the Department of Social Development with the aim of economic empowerment and job creation for the unemployed and homeless people.
The organisation gets people from all walks of complex societies and among them are highly effective (skilled) artisans, highly educated and unqualified persons, who are trained by the organisations where necessary. Some come from broken marriages, destroyed dreams, addictions and total disillusionment. Yatsar’s mission is to guide them back to a normal and fruitful life.
Yatsar assists those with potential to start their own business with entrepreneur training where needed, and act as an effective distributing agent to serve other missions to the effect of providing food and necessities on an ongoing basis.
Yatsar endeavours to create new opportunities for those who prove their potential and to facilitate their successful return to society thereby ensuring an economic contribution to society.
Projects / Programmes
Yatsar carries on specialised work projects, mainly in air conditioning and refrigeration, manufacturing of wooden garden furniture and carpet services (professional over-locking, custom sizing and repairs). In addition to the specific work projects, the centre believes in keeping the people productive and are absorbed into the following programmes and projects:
- Panel beating and spray painting;
- Building renovations and general maintenance;
- Motor mechanics workshop;
- Recycling / scrap metal;
An institution such as Yatsar cannot operate successfully only on what it believes in or what it plans. The centre is dependent on the business and local community to assist it with whatever means they have at their disposal.
Donations, in addition to income generated from their projects, make it possible to survive as a Welfare Institute and still be able to supply to others in need as far as food, clothing and necessities, especially to old age homes, NPOs that attend to persons with disabilities and children’s homes and in the process spread the Gospel.
The geographical area that Yatsar services and supports is within the Moot and surrounding areas. The organisation has expanded to four houses, which accommodates sixty people and further still be able to supply others in need. Many of the residents came from backgrounds involving alcohol and substance abuse and have positively changed their lives thereby assisting others with recovery.
The organisation is authorised to issue a Section 18A certificate for donations which entitles beneficiaries to tax exemption. (Public Benefit Organisation Reference Number 930009976).
It is also now in the process of improving and expanding its centre to accommodate and help more people. At this point, Yatsar has a turnover of approximately 250 people per year who are assisted to find the means and courage for self-sufficiency.
Yatsar is one of the largest food distributers to needy people in the Metropolitan area of Tshwane and extends its distribution to approximately 5 000 people including several care centres on an on-going basis. Yatsar has a proven track record of dedicated service and care for the past 20 years.
