About Company
THE PROBLEM
The world is beginning to realise the many ways in which mainstream economic thought has been failing our societies. The climate crisis, pandemics, and growing global inequality demonstrate the need for change.
The problem we face is the total dominance of a single and outdated form of economics at universities, which promotes the marketisation of society, leading to increased inequality, injustice and significant harm to the natural world. We need students of economics to leave university with a tool-kit of skills they can use to help us face these challenges effectively.
Our Purpose
We are building a student movement to challenge, interrogate and renew the discipline of economics and related fields, for social and climate justice.
Our Vision
We want to see economies fit for people and the planet. To achieve this vision, we fight to change the economics discipline and teaching methods. We work with universities to develop the following principles for their courses:
- Real world and evidence-based, climate conscious, people-focused, pluralist.
- Critical, open, diverse, interdisciplinary and decolonised
- Democratic (putting curriculum in the hands of students and teachers), valuing people over profit, and accessible to more people.
Our Actions
- Educate: Our network’s member groups are educating themselves and society on the persistent, recurrent, unfolding social and economic crises. They do this through on-campus and online events.
- Agitate: We’re supporting Economics programmes at major universities to take on the ecological and social crisis, preparing students to act collectively.
- Organise: Our local groups are working together and learning from each other. They’re expanding their reach, amplifying their message and developing future leaders to call for the changes we need at universities. Rethinking Economics International supports this this through organising local, regional and international gatherings as well as online training programs. Our local groups are working together, learning from each other and building a strong community of rethinkers.
