Sentinel Ocean Alliance
SOA works with underserved coastal communities and at-risk youth in Hout Bay, Cape Town. Our programmes help young people develop a love for the ocean through comprehensive and immersive ocean education and immersion experiences, where participants can learn important skills, develop a connection to the ocean, and pursue ocean-based opportunities.

About Company
Our organisation was born in 2018 in the town of Hout Bay, South Africa. We partnered with Waves For Change who run their surf therapy programme from our site, and established the Hout Bay Surf Lifesaving Club. COVID lockdowns in 2019 led to severe economic difficulties for our local communities, and we collaborated with other local organisations to coordinate a massive food donation scheme for our most vulnerable community members. In 2020, we partnered with Parley For The Oceans and joined their global cleanup network. In 2021, we launched the world’s first physical Parley Ocean School and our own Turn The Tide Ocean Therapy learn to swim programme. We expanded our reach in 2022 by partnering with JBay Surf Alliance to establish a surf therapy and environmental education programme in Jeffreys Bay. We also welcomed our first group of Ocean Sentinels - youth who have joined us for a 3-year pathway programme to gain a more immersive ocean education and ocean activism experience.
Sentinel Ocean Alliance provides a safe space to empower our youth through development programmes and environmental initiatives. Our programmes have a focus on skills development, mentorship and education to help cultivate a love and respect for the ocean.
