We are at a pivotal moment for human rights, gender justice and the HIV response, facing both significant challenges and also some important opportunities.   

 

Frontline AIDS has a long history of supporting communities and civil society partners around the world in advancing human rights and gender justice.   To lead this work into its next stage, we are looking for  a high-calibre advocate and manager , who shares our passion for the vital role of communities and civil society, and has experience working in Africa or elsewhere in the global south.  

 

You will have an excellent understanding of the current human rights context, including the rise of an organised anti-rights movement, with in depth insights into the diverse ways in which community-led advocacy organisations work to influence change in this context.   You will also bring knowledge of community-led monitoring using systems like our Rights – Evidence – ACTion (REAct) tool, and thought leadership on how community data can drive impactful programmes and advocacy.    

 

You bring go-getter energy to your work, with the confidence and ability to lead and drive high impact activities and influencing opportunities, and a commitment to supporting access to human rights spaces for communities on the frontline of the human rights response.   With excellent  written and verbal  communication skills and a strong sense of strategy, you can also navigate complex political landscapes, influence key decision-makers, and pivot where you need to, bringing others along with you.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES  

 

1. ACTION and thought LEADERSHIP (10%) 

 

  1. Leading, managing and monitoring the delivery of our current human rights and gender justice workplan situated under Action 3 of the Frontline AIDS Global Plan of Action. 
  2. Working closely with a wide network of Frontline AIDS partners through the Action 3 team to foster partner leadership on human rights and gender justice and to support community-led resistance to anti-rights mobilisation, while also maximising the added-value of Frontline AIDS as a global convenor.     
  3. Monitoring developments in the external social, legal and policy environment related to Frontline AIDS' human rights and gender justice, in particular the growing anti-rights threat, and provide thought leadership on how we respond to or pre-empt these, informing both ongoing strategy and the develop of our next global strategy, which will be finalised in 2025 to run from 2026-2030. 

 

2. ADVOCACY LEADERSHIP, COMMUNICATIONS, representation and research (50%) 

  1. Driving advocacy engagement with key institutions relevant to the Frontline AIDS human rights and gender justice workplan and to our strategy around resisting the anti-rights movement (eg UNAIDS, Human Rights mechanisms, Global Fund) and with key governments, donors and civil society actors, in collaboration with colleagues and partners in the Action 3, Global Advocacy and Programmes Teams.    
  2. Collaborating with Frontline AIDS’ Communications Team to develop and deliver communications and campaigns aimed at achieving human rights and gender justice goals, including growing your personal communications and social media profile.  
  3. Representing Frontline AIDS at relevant external events, eg meetings of the Human Rights Council and the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights, International AIDS Conference, ICASA etc. 
  4. Overseeing research projects that help to achieve advocacy goals on human rights and gender justice, including working with Frontline AIDS partners to maximise the research and advocacy impacts of community-led data gathered through our our Rights – Evidence – ACTion (REAct) tool, and managing consultants where needed.    
  5. Fostering the leadership of Frontline AIDS partners across all of our advocacy, communications, representation and research work, including championing the voices of young people and advocates from marginalised populations, while also leading team efforts to maximise the added value of Frontline Global as a global convenor. 

 

3. PROGRAMME DELIVERY, DESIGN and funding (20%) 

  1. Providing overarching thought leadership, alongside the Lead: Programmes (Human Rights) role, as we develop and strengthen our technical approach to human rights programming, including thinking on how we build on our long track record in products such as the ReACT tool that need to keep pace with our learning and the external environment. 
  2. Contributing to the delivery of restricted programmes with a focus on human rights and gender justice, in particular on our LGBT+ REACH programme, by providing strategic input for continuous programmatic impact and improvement and by supporting Frontline AIDS partners in the implementation of national, regional and global advocacy workplans, alongside others .
  3. Identifying fundraising opportunities, developing relationships with potential and current donors to sustain interest, writing reports for existing donors and drafting and design of proposals for future programmes. 

 

4. PEOPLE MANAGEMENT (10%) 

  1. Providing highly effective line management to direct reports (currently 2), as well as effective task management with key colleagues in other teams, ensuring a high level of performance and supporting individual development.  

 

5. Responding to human rights crises (10%) 

  1. Where needed, delivering support to Frontline AIDS partners facing human rights crises, convening or contributing to internal crisis response teams or contributing actively to responses led by partners or other actors. 

 

6. DEVELOPING THE FRONTLINE AIDS CULTURE (cross cutting)

QUALIFICATIONS/ KNOWLEDGE  

Academic or professional qualifications (or other expert knowledge) of human rights, particularly the role of community-led human rights response, monitoring and advocacy in holding duty bearers to account for human rights commitments 

 

 

Proven understanding of human rights challenges experienced by LGBTQ+ communities and other marginalized populations, particularly those living in the global South, and of how these impact on efforts to end AIDS and wider public health

 

 

EXPERIENCE 

 

At least five years’ experience in community- or civil society-led human rights advocacy work, gained in Africa or elsewhere in the global south.

 

Significant experience of advocating at a global level, including with UN agencies and donors   

 

Strong track record in working effectively with partners from different countries to deliver high quality advocacy with impact  

 

Experience or knowledge of community-based/led monitoring and its role in effective advocacy and programming, for example through community-managed data systems such as  our Rights – Evidence – ACTion (REAct) tool 

 

Experience of programme or proposal design and of donor engagement, with a track record of contributing to successful funding bids, preparing funding reports for donors and developing or deepening relationships with donors.   

 

Experience of task or line managing staff, and/ or a willingness to undertake line management training in order to develop these skills  

 

Some experience of  developing new products for programming, technical assistance and advocacy.   

 

  

 

  

 

SKILLS/ABILITIES  

Proven leadership skills gained in an advocacy context  

 

Excellent oral and written communication skills in English, and  ability to engage and network with a wide range of partners and stakeholders, from community and civil society partners to global development actors.

 

Willingness to develop new comms skills, for example using social media, blogs or digital campaigning 

 

 

Ability to maintain a clear head and work effectively with partners and colleagues during times of crises, ideally with some experience of advocacy or other work in response to human rights crises

 

Strong research skills, ideally including some knowledge of community-led research and monitoring, and a commitment to delivering high quality research and knowledge products  

 

 

Strong sense of advocacy strategy and a demonstrable ability to spot and seize advocacy opportunities.  

 

Fluency   in   French desirable, as is ability to work in other languages used in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe or the Middle East also desirable 

 

Experience using social media or other communications platforms including producing and sharing content and networking for professional purposes
