PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
AFAP is a dynamic non-profit social enterprise devoted to fostering robust fertilizer and Agri-inputs markets across Africa through sustainable projects and market-driven business solutions in agricultural inputs and agribusiness sectors.
Our multifaceted approach encompasses policy and regulatory reform, capacity building, financial credit provision, and data-based market intelligence development. Leveraging our technical expertise and entrepreneurial innovation, we enhance the fertilizer and agribusiness value chain by connecting African Hub Agro-dealers and Smallholder Farmers with global resources, technologies, and financing providers.
Afap is seeking a detail-oriented General Accountant to support financial operations across multiple donor-funded projects. The role focuses on accurate transaction processing in Sage Intacct, accounts payable, reconciliations, cash flow management and ensuring strong financial controls and audit readiness.

Afap is seeking a detail-oriented General Accountant to support financial operations across multiple donor-funded projects. The role focuses on accurate transaction processing in Sage Intacct, accounts payable, reconciliations, cash flow management and ensuring strong financial controls and audit readiness.
Roles & Responsibilities
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Verify supplier invoices and supporting documentation and prepare weekly payment batches for approval and processing.
- Process payments via banking platforms (ABSA and Citibank) and resolve payment queries.
- Capture all financial transactions in Sage Intacct, ensuring accurate GL, project, and activity coding
- Maintain complete, organised, and audit-ready financial records.
- Prepare and post month-end journals (accruals, prepayments, reallocations) with full supporting schedules.
- Perform monthly reconciliations (bank, payroll, travel advances, intercompany, funder accounts) and resolve discrepancies.
- Manage travel advances, including processing, tracking, and liquidation reviews.
- Support payroll accounting, including cost allocations and balance sheet reconciliations.
- Update cash flow reports and monitor weekly bank balances.
- Process intercompany transfers with correct documentation and coding.
- Assist with donor reporting and ensure alignment with financial records.
- Provide support on Sage Intacct and assist with system setup and queries.
- Support internal and external audit processes by preparing schedules and documentation.
- Strong working knowledge of US GAAP and ability to apply accounting standards in daily transaction processing and reporting.
- Proficiency in Sage Intacct or similar ERP systems (e.g., Oracle, NetSuite, Evo).
- Basic understanding of payroll accounting and cost allocations across projects.
- Experience in month-end close processes, including preparation of journals, accruals, and prepayments.
- Experience with donor-funded projects and fund accounting principles (advantage).
- Competence in cash flow monitoring and treasury-related activities.
- Strong Excel skills (e.g., pivot tables, lookups, data analysis).
- Ability to prepare and interpret financial reports and supporting schedules.
- Ability to maintain accurate, audit-ready documentation and records.
- Advanced skills in accounts payable reconciliation, general ledger management, and overall balance sheet reconciliations.
- Solid understanding of financial controls, audit procedures, and compliance requirements.
Requirements & Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Degree/Diploma in Accounting or Finance
- 3 – 5 years’ experience in an accounting role
- Experience with Sage Intacct (or similar ERP system)
- Strong knowledge of reconciliations, journals and financial controls High attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines
