How to Help Your Teen Build Healthy Habits
The teenage years are a time of growth and challenge, filled with new experiences, increased responsibilities, and hormonal changes. This period also presents a valuable opportunity to guide teens toward building healthy habits that can positively impact their future. Mbali Mapholi, Laager Rooibos partner dietitian, shares insights to help teens establish healthy routines in 2025.“After a year as a mom to a teenage boy, I’ve learned that raising teens involves challenges, growth, and rewarding moments,” said Mapholi. “The New Year is an ideal time to help your teen adopt achievable and sustainable habits for a healthier future.”Start with Achievable GoalsHelp your teen set realistic and actionable goals to foster a sense of control and accomplishment. Suggestions include:
- Drinking a glass of water or a cup of homemade Laager Rooibos iced tea with every meal.
- Limiting screen time by stepping away from devices 1-2 hours before bed.
- Stretching for 5-15 minutes every hour while using screens or studying.
- Preparing balanced meals and involving them in the process.
- Participating in activities they enjoy, such as hiking or sports.
- Practicing stress management techniques like mindfulness or journaling.
- Encouraging screen-free time before bed.
- Promoting calm activities like reading or enjoying Laager Rooibos tea.
- Setting regular sleep schedules, even on weekends.
