SCOPE OF WORKS FOR HYDROGEOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT AND BOREHOLE SITING IN HAMMANSKRAAL AREA

SCOPE OF WORKS FOR HYDROGEOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT AND BOREHOLE SITING IN HAMMANSKRAAL AREA

  1. Project details

Project description

Borehole rehabilitation which includes drilling of new borehole to connect to existing water storage facilities as part of WASH programmes intervention activities in the Hammanskraal area following the outbreak of cholera

The goal is to provide access to adequate clean and safe water to the affected communities

Location

South Africa, Gauteng, Hammanskraal

Municipality

Section 2 Local Municipality

2. Purpose

The main objective of this consultancy is to seek an individual Consultant/Consulting firm with capacity.

  1. To conduct hydrogeological and geophysical Investigations in the Hammanskraal area, for siting of a potentially high yielding borehole of good water quality.
  2. To determine and recommend if a borehole can be established at the location of interest.
  3. Borehole siting to be conducted by a qualified hydrogeologists and is to provide a technical report by conducting hydrogeological desktop study, geophysical surveys and identify suitable area with a high groundwater yield.

3. The scope of works

To conduct a scientific search for and location of a borehole drilling target assessed to have the greatest chance for success for locating a potentially high yielding borehole of good water quality.

  1. The service provider is expected to use primary and secondary data to ascertain groundwater potential. Secondary data will involve a desk study of available information/data on existing boreholes, drill logs, reports, and maps. In contrast, primary data will be obtained by conducting hydrogeological measurements within the study area using the necessary hydrogeological and geophysical surveying equipment.
  2. Also, the consultant must be capable of successfully integrating the earth sciences of geophysics, geology and hydrogeology for the purpose of locating and siting a borehole.
  3. Approach:

The specific activities shall include:

Desk study:

  1. Review existing data, satellite images, existing studies and site investigations, geological reports, maps (if available), borehole and surface water records, etc. for the purposes of siting of a potentially high yielding borehole of good water quality.

Hydrogeophysical Surveying:

  1. Carry out a reconnaissance survey of the project area (GPS coordinates, estimated groundwater depth, expected groundwater quality in the area, behaviour of borehole water sources in the area and performance where applicable), inspection of geological, geo-morphological and structural characteristics of the investigated area including verification of existing data and findings
  2. Conduct a hydrogeological study using up-to-date tools and equipment to ascertain the hydrogeology of the project area, aquifer parameters, and other aquifer characteristics that will assist with siting of a high yielding productive borehole of good water quality.
  3. Conduct a geophysical survey using appropriate geophysical methods and techniques include but not limited to: i. Magnetic Surveys ii. Electrical Resistivity Surveys iii. Seismic Refraction Surveys iv. Frequency Domain Electromagnetic Surveys v. Gravimetric Survey for siting of groundwater borehole position.
  4. Analyse the data above (hydrogeological/geophysical data) to assess the groundwater potential in the project area.
  5. Make key recommendations and examine the possibility of drilling borehole as a viable water source in the  area .
  6. Select the most suitable borehole site within the project area subject to the above results while considering the water quality expected and the requirements by the Department of Water and Sanitation, and Local Municipality.
  7. Check on-site conditions, including space for a drilling rig and other allied machinery to access the project area.
  8. Compile and submit to ForAfrika a report, which shall include but not be limited to all the details of the above investigations.

4. Key Deliverables

  1. NB: This contract will be deemed complete upon receipt and acceptance of the following outputs of the consultancy exercise.
  2. The hydrogeophysical survey report, providing recommendations of borehole drilling target site (with GPS coordinates), drilling method, drilling depth, quality, and yield predictions for the location.

5. Reporting

  1. The hydrogeophysical report will give a detailed map delineating the investigated location, Introduction, environmental background, geology and hydrogeology of other boreholes and water points within the area, Methods/techniques of geophysical investigation and interpretation Aquifer Potential yield,  Proposed drilling location and depth,  Proposed method of drilling and environmental impact and Conclusion and recommendation
  2. Recommendations will be given on the most suitable site for borehole drilling, the required depth, water quality, design and installation details, and other relevant aspects.
  3. In addition, pictures taken during the actual field activity shall be included in the report. All geophysical data, including its interpretation, will be produced as an appendix to the final report.

6. Additional

  1. The Service provider is expected to present a work programme with time frames and coordination to ForAfrika for consideration.
  2. Must have proven track record with references in conducting hydrogeological investigations and borehole siting
  3. Is expected to work closely with the ForAfrika management and technical team, and partner organisations to conduct the study.
