Heartlines’ What’s Your Story? programme demonstrates how storytelling can amplify empathy, transforming individuals, relationships and communities. By inviting South Africans to share their personal narratives, it breaks down stereotypes, promotes healing, and inspires collaboration. Below are some key discoveries from What’s Your Story? participants about empathy that could transform how we understand and harness its power to improve relationships, foster social cohesion and drive meaningful change across different levels.Empathy starts with you“When I look in the mirror, I not only see myself, but What’s Your Story? makes you think about others. I feel more curious and have more empathy as it makes you realise… to put yourself in others’ shoes,” observed a What’s Your Story? workshop participant. Sharing your experiences fosters self-awareness and connection. Also, listening to others’ stories can challenge biases, broaden perspectives and create trust. Reflect on how your story has shaped you. What story will you share today?

Empathy strengthens relationships“I have gained emotional intelligence from this experience through communicating and connecting with my family and children. I am trying to see things from my children’s perspective, though this can still be a challenge,” shared another workshop participant. In personal situations and workplaces, storytelling builds trust, improves communication and fosters collaboration. How might understanding someone’s journey transform your relationships?
Empathy unites communitiesExplaining how she reached out to an Ethiopian shopkeeper in her community, another What’s Your Story? workshop participant shared, “I was interested to hear where he comes from, how he came to SA, what was his name, because everyone calls him ‘My Friend’. He was very appreciative. He said no one has asked what his name is. He was curious to understand why I wanted to know about him, and I explained that I have done this exercise and want to get to know more about people that I interact with. This is my new mission.” When communities prioritise storytelling, they foster cohesion and collective action to address challenges like violence and unemployment. Imagine your community united by empathy. What role will you play in creating safe spaces for connection?Empathy ignites transformationEmpathy, fostered through storytelling, is the spark that ignites transformation.
