About SCCT :

The Scalabrini Centre of Cape Town is a South African NPO advocating for the rights of people on the move including children on the move. Our mission is to welcome, to protect, to promote and to integrate, people on the move into local communities. Lawrence House is the Scalabrini Child and Youth Care Centre, a special place of safety which offers specialized care and protection programmes for children on the move. 

Purpose of position (summary): 

To coordinate and create a safe and nourishing environment where the children in the care of Lawrence House can express themselves, build positive relationships and grow holistically by holding all programmes in alignment with trauma-informed methodology and abiding with the Children’s Act. 

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

 

 • Programme implementation:

Be knowledgeable of the Lawrence House developmental care methodology and strive to always apply a trauma-informed approach, familiarise with each child’s IDP as to advance what MDT has decided on for each child. Plan and implement developmental interventions which support youth growth. Support SW in implementing the outreach programmes. Mentor the members of the House Committee.

 • Programme coordination: 

Coordinate & co-design residential care and support implementation (as needed) of House activities, appointments, and annual events (house outings, celebration of specific public holidays, etc). Manage timetables, (quarterly activities, weekly planner, weekend schedule). Coordinate recreational activities & all logistics: extra mural activities and holiday programme. 

• UNITE programme:

 UNITE works with high school students from five high schools in the area. The aim is to build social cohesion and transformation in South African society and to develop and improve skills in leadership and community activism. This includes ‘club’ conversations in each high school, weekly leadership sessions, leadership camps, team-building outings and specialized workshops. Receive and approve UNITE programme per Term, receive and approve camp risk assessment, support and attend UNITE annual evaluation process, and coordinate performance appraisals for UNITE staff. 

• Monitor, Evaluation and Learning: 

To assess the performance of projects at organisational level (E.g. focus groups with residents and annual evaluation) 

• Administration:

Maintain high quality administrative functions. Attend staff meetings and multidisciplinary panels etc. Record interventions and observations in the designated books. Compile a quarterly consolidated programmatic report. Attend trainings & workshops. Prepare payment requisitions on time and to keep accurate records.

• Code of conduct and ethics: 

Adhere to the code of conduct and ensure that children’s circumstances are kept confidential at all times. Lead by example by actively modelling acceptable values and acting in good faith at all times. Minimum Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

Minimum requirements: 

  • National Diploma or qualification in Youth Development 
  • Minimum of four (4) years’ experience in working with traumatized children in social development-related work 
  • Competence in planning and coordinating a project from conception to planning and coordination of activities. 
  • Ability to write reports of good quality as well as excellent English verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Good facilitation and supervision skills 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel 

Advantageous:

  • Experience in working with refugees and migrants. 
  •  Knowledge of Trauma-informed approach 
  • Own transport and a valid driver’s license
