POSITION: Social Worker

GENERAL
- Location: Heathfield, Southern Suburbs
- Reporting to: Occupational Therapist (Team Leader)
- Hours of work: Part-time; 20 hrs per week (Monday – Friday: 1:30 – 17:30) / after-hrs on call may be required from time to time
- Nature of contract: Permanent
- Salary range : R12,000 – 15,000 (Commensurate with experience)

ABOUT THE ORGANISATION AND THE ROLE
United by a vision for healthy, active, meaningful lives; Glendale home provides personal care, social, vocational, educational, residential, spiritual, financial, and healthcare services for Jewish adults and aged persons with profound intellectual disabilities. Established in 1966 and situated in the southern suburbs, the home cares for 43 adults between the ages of 24 and 81 years old.
The role of the Social Worker is to drive social, familial and communal inclusion strategies for our residents. Working closely with our team of clinicians, this role is responsible for coordinating schedules of programs and activities for our residents with their families, other welfare organisations, shuls, and the greater Cape Town Jewish community.
MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Family liaison
- Support families with maintaining regular contact with their loved ones, through the coordination of: visits, phone/video calls schedules, general messaging, reading and writing letters, etc. to ensure our residents don’t feel lonely and isolated.
- Support families with coordination of care-related matters such as: outing, shopping, medical appointments and hospitalisation.
Communal Inclusivity
- Support the OT with the implementation of an annual Jewish calendar for the home around communal and religious activities; in fun, dynamic and innovative ways.
- Help the OT with scheduling and coordination of Yiddishkeit program, including Shuls and outings, Rabbinical visits to the home, high holidays Celebrations, Shabbos program and the various communal events.
Social Inclusivity
- Drive the implementation of social inclusion programs for the residents such as: pen pals, Mensch network, civic duties, volunteering, etc. aiming to inspire our residents to be active members of society and inspire them to act as a force for good in the world.
- Support residents with the development of personal hobbies and provide activities that are aligned their interests.
General
- Assist with the administrative maintenance of care plans and case administrative system, updated notes and monthly reports.
- Liaise with Operations and Finance managers around the logistical and financial administrative requirements of the role.
- Support the care services and management teams with any other inclusivity related activities in the home.
REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
The ideal applicant will have the following competencies:
Work experience and industry exposure
- Relevant under-grad qualification (Social work, Psychology, Counselling Occupational Therapy etc).
- At least 2 years previous exposure to the care industry and/or any other clinical environment is essential.
- Proven track record of professionally managing boundaries with clients and their families.
Strong Communication and interpersonal skills
- A patient, caring, compassionate and nurturing disposition is essential.
- Able to manage sensitive information in a private and confidential way and remain discrete about clinical and care related information.
- Ability to sensitively manage difficult personalities and demanding situations in a calm and composed manner.
- Able to drive hard conversations in a sensitive and clear way to ensure residents are being advocated for in the most fair and professional manner.
- Comfortable using various communication technologies to ensure our residents can connect with their loved ones all over the world. This includes smart devices (android and mac) video and conference calls, skype, emails, whatsapp, etc.
Excellent Administration Skills
- Strong administration and coordination skills with the ability to manage complexities and liaise with multiple stakeholders including: clients, their family, heroes, external service providers and other communal organisations like Shuls and schools.
- Able to plan, coordinate and work well in a structured manner is paramount, in order to accommodate for the ever-changing needs of our residents.
Specific requirements
- Passion for working with disabilities, vulnerable people and their loved ones.
- Comfortable operating in a service-driven work culture while liaising with families around the globe, who lives in different countries, cultures and time zones.
- Passionate about the care industry and comfortable working with vulnerable and disabled people.
- Passionate about working in and for the community with experience or knowledge of the Jewish Community and Jewish way of life
- Driver’s licence – essential
