The Brain Injury Trust/HeadsUP! is a non - governmental initiative based in Khayelitsha which acts to prevent head-injuries and supports survivors of brain injuries; most of whom are young-men between the ages of 17 and 35, and their families. Originally based in Groote Schuur Hospital.

About Company
We have now opened a new service in Khayelitsha for the Cape Flats and our service comprises:
- Community education and prevention campaigns including the support of a men and boys' wellness movement
- Family training and caregiver support to ensure maximum rehabilitation of brain trauma survivors
- Family and survivor support group
- Advocacy for comprehensive services
- Research into survivor and family needs
We are seeking the services of a registered social worker who will provide services to survivors, their families, and the community at large. The post is funded by the Department: Social Development (DSD) Disability Unit, Department: a Provincial Government of the Western Cape. The contract is renewable as funding is available.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for establishing good referral systems between the hospital services and HeadsUP!
- Implementation of various methods of social work using an integrated and developmental approach, including community outreach, individual, family and group work skills
- Promote psycho-social rehabilitation and network with community resources
- Develop and run educational programmes for young people and service providers such as teachers, nurses and social workers
- Stay abreast of new developments in the neuro-rehabilitation and social work field
- Manage a development of a men and boys wellness movement
- Manage a team of professionals, lay-counsellors and volunteers
- Ensure smooth and harmonious relationship within the team and other offices
REQUIREMENTS:
- Appropriate Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in Social Work
- Minimum of isiXhosa and English languages skills
- Valid code B/EB driver's license
- Registration with the South African Council for Social Services Professions (SACSSP) as Social Worker and proof of payment of registration for the current year
- Appropriate knowledge and experience in Trauma, Mental Health care and psychosocial rehabilitation
- Counselling skills and experience
- Computer literacy
- Strong emphasis on a developmental approach and community outreach skills
- Initiative and the ability to think creatively
