Vacancy Announcement: Materials Design Officer
Purpose
This position is responsible for providing technical and operational support to the Materials Design and Production Unit.
Contract: One year fixed term contract
Location: Cape Town
Overview
Wordworks is a well-known non-profit organization that promotes early language and literacy development at home, in the community, in ECD centers, and in schools. The organisation is known for its inventive and effective programs, as well as its high-quality, multilingual resources and training. Wordworks' material requirements have increased, demanding material growth.
We are looking for a Materials Design Officer to provide technical and operational support to Wordworks' Material Design and Production Unit.
Reporting Accountability
The Materials Design Officer will report to the Materials Design & Production Manager and collaborate closely with other units within the organisation.
Key responsibilities:
Edit graphics, such as photographs or illustrations for materials production.
Typeset manuscripts into predesigned master layouts.
Make editorial and design corrections in new and existing publications.
Perform administrative tasks such as minutes, correspondence, proof sign-offs.
Conduct accurate and timeous electronic filing, back up and management of all organisational material file repositories.
Fulfil small, ad hoc internal design requirements (for example: forms, presentations, infographics, social media graphics, invitations, etc).
Work with the materials design team (internal staff and external contributors) to ensure that deadlines are met.
Skills:
Technical capability is essential. A sound knowledge of InDesign and Photoshop in particular (knowledge of Illustrator will be advantageous) is required. A good eye for design composition and flow would be advantageous.
A basic understanding of the book publishing process, production and print. Basic editing skills would be advantageous.
Proficiency in the Google Suite and the Microsoft Office Suite is essential.
Ability to communicate well while working independently and/or within a team structure.
Excellent administrative and organisational skills.
A strong competence in systematic and logical approaches, with the ability to work with high accuracy.
Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment. Must be flexible and adaptable to fluctuating workflows and levels. Ability to balance multiple tasks simultaneously.
A strong work ethic with a commitment to meeting multiple deadlines while continuously producing an excellent standard of work.
Must be open to feedback.
Ability to read and write in an African language would be an advantage.
Qualifications and experience
The successful candidate will have a minimum of a post matric qualification (diploma or Bachelor’s degree), although a bachelor’s degree is preferred. At least 2-5 years’ experience in a similar role.
