Data Analyst 

Corruption Watch (CW) is a South African non-profit organisation with a 12-year track record and is an accredited chapter of Transparency International. CW’s primary objective is to combat corruption which it does through various strategic initiatives. 

At the core of CW’s mandate is the reports that it receives from the public. CW has, since its inception, operated a reporting system which encourages members of the public to share their experience of corruption. The organisation uses this information from the public in various ways, including research, preparing contributions to legislative or policy development, undertaking strategic litigation on matters that are in the public interest, investigating a selected number of reports (of necessity this number is limited because of resource constraints), developing campaigns, and more.

CW seeks to fill the position of a Data Analyst to turn data into insight that will contribute towards meaningful societal change in the field of anti-corruption.

Areas of responsibility

Reporting to the Head of Stakeholder Relations and Campaigns, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following responsibilities: 

Management of data from sources including reports handling system:

  1. Overseeing the inputting of data derived from primary and secondary sources including the reports handling process.

  2. Scrubbing, analysing, and interpreting data for a range of purposes including the development of reports on trends, patterns, and sectors.

  3. Liaising and coordinating with external stakeholders such as National Treasury and Auditor-General South Africa in respect of data sharing for maximum counter-corruption impact. 

  4. Assess incoming reports for appropriate escalation to CW units for appropriate action (e.g. whistle-blower advice, legal relief, pre-investigations, and investigative journalism).

  5. Locate and define new processes or improvement opportunities in data collection and the reports handling process insofar as data handling is concerned.

Oversight of digital tools:

  1. Management of existing and future digital tools including functionality oversight, data input, and analysis and reporting. 

  2. Identifying and flagging of procurement deviations and expansions for pre-investigation or investigative journalism.

Qualification and experience

  1. Bachelor’s degree in data science, computer science, statistics or relevant equivalent degree.      

  2. Minimum of seven (7) years’ experience in the same role.

  3. Practical experience with data analysis tools and software like Python, R, SQL, and Excel.

  4. Knowledge of data visualisation tools. 

  5. Working knowledge of whistle-blower protection and South Africa’s public procurement system will be an added advantage. 

  6. Working knowledge of the protection of personal information and data protection.

  7. Project management and leadership training.

  8. Proven experience as a data specialist.

  9. Technical expertise regarding data models, database design development, data mining, and segmentation techniques. 

  10. Knowledge of statistics and experience using statistical packages for analysing data sets.

  11. Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organise, analyse, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy.

  12. Computer programming skills for tool management. 

  13. Adept at research, report writing, and presenting findings.

  14. Project planning skills. 

  15. Presentation and facilitation skills. 

  16. Strong communication, time management, and interpersonal skills.

  17. Excellent command of English.

  18. Advocacy skills.

  19. Strategic thinking skills. 

  20. Ability to work autonomously and within a team environment. 

  21. Experience of working in a pressured environment and effectively managing competing demands in short timescales. 

  22. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
