Fossil Free SA is a campaign working for an end to the fossil fuel industry in South Africa, particularly through fossil fuel divestment and challenging greenwashing in all its forms. Our core campaigns are for divestment by individuals and institutions, an end to greenwashing by the creative industries, and for bans on fossil fuel advertising. 

Based in Cape Town, Fossil Free SA seeks to appoint a

DIVESTMENT CAMPAIGNER 

(FULL-TIME ROLE) (10 MONTH CONTRACT)

The Divestment Campaigner will work with the FFSA director to lead our existing divestment campaigns:

  1. De-fossilising Universities : For divestment by other SA universities and pension funds and 
  2. #InvestFossilFree : Lobbying for fossil fuel investment options from SA’s top asset managers, especially the GEPF/PIC. 

Key responsibilities for the Divestment Campaigner will include: 

  • Implementing current campaign strategies and devising new strategies 
  • Leading the divestment team, in collaboration with the FFSA comms team.  
  • Drafting letters and emails to key stakeholders and campaign targets  
  • Updating the website divestment sections  
  • Keeping the divestment campaign timelines up to date 
  • Initiating and helping organis e events, actions and activities in line with the strategic goals of the campaign 
  • Researching ethical finance and climate developments 
  • Engaging in numerous face-to-face meetings with key stakeholders and campaign targets 

 

The Divestment Campaigner must have the following: 

  • A Bachelor's degree or higher; or a very clear demonstrated track record in a similar role.
  • A creative, strategic networker and thinker.
  • Leadership experience.
  • A clear knowledge of and passion for climate, environment and human rights issues,  
  • An interest in and some knowledge of finance, and a well-organised, patient and systematic temperament  
  • Must be a good writer and e ditor.
  • Strong digital skills, e.g. Google Workplace, Canva, Wordpress, social platforms.   
  • Enjoy organising and participating in protest actions

This is a Cape Town based, 10-month full-time, flexi-time contract, remote working, with a possibility of renewal, starting June 2024. You must have your own cellphone, a reliable computer and Internet connection, and be able to travel locally to occasional in-person meetings and events.
