Child and Youth Care Worker

The Johannesburg Children’s Home (JCH) is one of the oldest charitable institutions in Gauteng, which has provided a ‘home away from home’ and cared for thousands of children for over 130 years. This exciting role within the Johannesburg Children’s Home is aimed at ensuring ongoing sustainability and continued development of the home. 

Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Shift Supervisor, the Child and Youth Care Worker (CYCW) will be responsible for the overall wellbeing of the children under their care, by taking care of the children’s physical, emotional, educational, and psychological needs. The CYCW will be responsible for eight to ten children at any given time, living together in a cottage. We have fulltime and relief positions available.

 

Duties will include:

  1. Oversee all meals for the children by either preparing meals, collecting from the main kitchen and serve or oversee children preparing meals for themselves.

  2. Ensure effective timekeeping with children including bed and bath times, leaving for school, attending events playtime, and attending special meetings when required

  3. Ensure children attend school, study, and supervise homework.

  4. Administer medication when required

  5. Collect all school letters and reports and hand over to relevant staff at JCH

  6. Attend to all clothing requirements of the children 

  • Ensure that children perform their household chores like:

    1. washing dishes

    2. pack away own laundry

    3. make their beds

    4. tidy their rooms

    5. spring clean on weekends

  1. Ensure that bed linen is changed on Sunday evening, check children’s cupboards and bedrooms and report all repair requirements to Maintenance

  2. Implementing of developmental programmes and disciplinary structures

  3. Attend all meetings and trainings as required

The ideal candidate must display the following characteristics and experience

  1. CYCW qualification

  2. Minimum of 1 year service as a CYCW

  3. Passion for children and social development.

  4. Good interpersonal skills.

  5. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  6. Ability to work under pressure and remain calm in a crisis

  7. Understanding of the Children’s Act is essential.

  8. Drivers license
