INVITATION TO APPLY FOR APPOINTMENT TO THE BOARD OF MANAGEMENT 

 

The Director and the Board of the Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children (SBCWC) hereby invite applications from suitable candidates for possible appointment to the Board of Management. 

 

 

SBCWC is a one-stop residential shelter for abused women and children established in 1999, in Cape Town. Since its inception, its primary mission has been to provide holistic and integrated services to survivors of gender-based violence. As a Khuseleka One-Stop Centre our services include an emergency response programme, legal protection programme, advocacy and lobbying programme, child protection programme, substance abuse unit, economic empowerment programme, ECD centre and psychosocial counselling programme. 

 

 

In celebration of its 25th year anniversary,  SBCWC seeks three (3) exceptional Board members who will serve in a voluntary capacity to support the organisation’s governance and leadership, and drive the next chapter of organisational growth, vision and strategic direction. Successful candidates will be required to  serve for a minimum period of one term of two years, but can stand for re-election thereafter,with the re-election period limited to one term. This is a unique opportunity for individuals who are committed to our mission and want to lend their knowledge, skills, and time to further its mission. Service on our Board of management is guided by the organisation’s constitution and core values, including a feminist ethic of care. 

 

We seek board members with experience in finance, business administration, management and communication. 

 

 

Requirements

  • Prospective candidates must be suitable to serve on a Board by virtue of their qualifications, expertise and experience and have some of the following skills - policy making, governance, finance, fundraising and business management, communications and media, community work and organisational development.

  • Be committed to gender equality, feminism and empowerment of women, have an awareness of and sensitivity to gender issues.

  • Be committed to making a positive difference in the gender-based violence and shelter movement sectors.

 

Roles and responsibilities

The role and objective of the Board of Management is providing leadership to the organisation by: 

  • Working closely with the Director of the Centre to provide oversight on governance and organisational development.  

  • Monitoring organisational progress to ensure that the organisation fulfils its objectives.

  • Provide oversight on the financial accountability of the organisation.

  • Provide strategic direction and planning for the ongoing sustainability of the organisation.

  • Provide strategic leadership for developing and sustaining partnerships and the growth of the organisation's funding base.

 

In order to accomplish its work, the Board meets once a quarter, but members may be called to participate in ad hoc meetings, either via email or virtual and in-person meetings, to attend to urgent matters as they arise. We would prefer candidates based in Cape Town, however, the Board is open to applications within the rest of South Africa.
