About Soul City Institute

Soul City Institute for Social Justice is an intersectional feminist organisation, working to ensure that girls, young women and gender minorities enjoy substantive equality, with access to resources and opportunities that enable them to live fulfilling lives. We promote, support and amplify girls, young women and gender minorities’ feminist consciousness, voice, agency and activism. Our vision is a just society where girls, young women and gender minorities live with dignity, exercise self-determination, and have the health and well-being to achieve their fullest potential.

About the Programme

The Feminist Leadership and Activism Centre (FLAC), a programme of the Soul City Institute for Social Justice (SCI) is a learning, and co-creation space that promotes feminist consciousness.  It is a space of generative possibilities, that aims to inspire young, African women in all their diversity to search and embrace lifelong learning, empowering and nurturing. It seeks to provide education as a communal space of learning, sharing and connection in order explore social realities that affect the quality of life of women in all their diversity. 

The FLAC Fellowship Programme is a one-of-a-kind feminism and leadership opportunity open to all young women in all their diversity aged between 18 and 25 years from South Africa who wish to address and dismantle patriarchy, achieve self-determination to fully realise their human rights and live with dignity in a just society. 

The two year-long programme prepares young people to become leaders of change in their communities through learning in modules such as Gender and Healing: Reflections on Childhood gender conditioning and its impact on the lives of girls and women, Feminism 101: Introduction to Feminism, Feminist Activism and Movement Building, Sexual & Gender Based Violence & SRHR, Feminist Leadership, Communications, Media & Advocacy and Economic & Climate Justice. 

The programme team, mentors, and mentees all work together to impact communities through innovative ideas, hence truly accomplishing the purpose of FLAC. 

SCI is accepting applications from interested parties to participate in this programme.

Eligibility Criteria

All interested participants must have the following:

  1. Strictly matric or NQF equivalent 

  2. 18-25 Years Old 

  3. Self-identify as a woman in all their diversity and/or non-binary  

  4. Track record of activism (Preferably with focus on women in all their diversities and/or non-binary 

  5. Testimonials/reference letters from community members and leaders, teachers, etc 

  6. Demonstrate a commitment to leadership social justice and/or feminism (through a submission of a one-pager detailing the leadership skills) 

  7. History of or location within a women’s rights or social justice organisation

  8. Urban/rural mix

  9. Unemployed/employed mix

  10. Persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply

  1. Please submit your CV and a motivation letter 

  2. Contact details including email address and cellphone number of two reference individuals (the community representative, teacher and/or employer)

  3. Applications are open for those in South Africa

CV

  1. Your CV must be in Times New Roman, 12 Font, with 1-inch margins should not be more than 1 page.

Two Letters of recommendation

  1. Your letters should come from people who know your work ethic and commitment to your community. Friends and family members are discouraged from writing letters of recommendation.

  2. Recommenders should state their name, position, contact info, and relationship to the applicant at the top of the letter.

A 1-2 pages document describing an Identify an issue you have identified in your community that concerns you. How would you address this issue?
