Salary : ZAR 1,115,000

Are you who we’re looking for?

You are a committed and expert anti-racism and DEI leader with proven experience of leading organisations’ efforts to deliver safe and inclusive working environments, with an specialist understanding of the systemic and structural nature of inequity and demonstrable  awareness of how intersectionalities further exacerbate inequalities. A self-starter who is comfortable collaborating with and catalysing people across organisations, you will play an active role in leading our anti-racism and ‘doing development differently’ commitments, working across multiple workstreams and teams. In close collaboration with our staff, including our Directors and wider Senior Leadership team, as well as other key contacts, you will help transform Frontline AIDS, putting us at the forefront of innovative decolonial and anti-oppressive interventions in global health and the international development sector.  

Key responsibilities

  • Lead on the development and delivery of a strategy for anti-racism and “doing development differently” (DDD) at Frontline AIDS, taking key decisions to support the scale up of our work in this area, and working closely with Frontline AIDS staff, the Executive and Deputy Directors, the wider Senior Leadership Team, our Board of Trustees and other key stakeholders to ensure that these are implemented

  • Provide decision making and direction, as well as expect guidance and facilitation to team Heads and Directors to support individual clusters and pillars to integrate anti-racism, wider development sector decolonisation principles and initiatives into all of their work and to champion and action diversity initiatives across the wider Frontline AIDS partnership

  • Lead Frontline AIDS’ action on diversity, equity and inclusion, deciding on and actioning priorities for anti-racism and other forms of discrimination, in liaison with the People team, and with the Global Organisation team, Safeguarding and other key project teams, to include key initiatives such as a review of all Frontline AIDS policies, consulting with affected staff and external experts as appropriate. 

  • Lead on developing programmes and events leading to the dismantling of structural racism within the organisation

  • Establish mechanisms to address racism within the organisation, providing restoration for people affected and holding accountable those responsible

  • Lead the monitoring, evaluation, reporting and learning of progress on Frontline AIDS’ anti-racism work and other diversity initiatives, including designing and hosting regular inductions and learning sessions for our staff and trustees. 

  • Track new legislation and international trendsand take decisions to ensure Frontline AIDS complies with diversity, equity and inclusion laws and best practices, particularly in South Africa and the UK where the majority of Frontline AIDS staff are currently based, alongside other locations as appropriate.

  • Represent Frontline AIDS anti-racism and doing development differently work in external fora and events that are relevant to these issues, and provide leadership and direction on wider external communications relating to these areas

  • Organise DEI  training workshops for staff, leadership and the Board to address culture related issues that fuel racism within the organisation

Qualifications/ Knowledge

Significant experience of leading DEI or similar work in the UK and/or  Africa.  

 

Knowledge of diversity, equity and inclusion considerations that may arise in globalised organisations with staff working across multiple locations, and best practice approaches to resolving these.

 

Familiarity with the existing sector debates and discussions on shifting power, decolonization, and anti-racism within international development. 

 

Graduate level qualification or equivalent experience.

 

Understanding of HR procedures, with expertise in and ability to take decisions on HR policies and law relating to our primary locations (UK, South Africa, Lebanon and Southern Africa more broadly) especially desirable.

 

Knowledge of issues in HIV or global health, and understanding of the post-colonial heritage and political and financial structures that underpin the aid and international development, sectors.

 

Experience

Experience working in multinational and multi-cultural organisations on DEI issues

Experience working on dismantling structural racism within multinational and multicutuaral organisations

Experience in developing DEI strategy and plans to address racism within organisations

Experience in organising training events and interventions to address racismExperience of project management, leadership and decision making, including commissioning and managing external consultants to meet agreed objectives.

 

Experience of leading colleagues and/or other stakeholders around action or measurable change on anti-racism, DEI, or other similar social impact causes.

Experience in developing accountability mechanisms to hold people to account on DEI issues

 

  1. Experience of managing channels for addressing issues raised in relation to anti-racism and diversity, equity and inclusion, and strong commitment to ensuring safety alongside a willingness to explore approaches that support restoration, reconciliation and learning.

  2. Experience of facilitating courageous conversations and group dialogues on anti-racism, DEI, and other related issues.

 

Experience in critically analysing and interrogating policies and/or internal systems with an anti-racist lens, and in taking decisions that reflect this analysis.

 

Experience of external representation and communications on anti-racism and DEI issues.

Skills/Abilities

Excellent verbal and written communication.

Confident using their influencing skills, respecting confidentiality and gaining trust from colleagues, Frontline AIDS partners and other stakeholders.

Confident and proficient in using presentation tools and other Microsoft Office applications. 

Strong interpersonal skills, demonstrating high levels of personal integrity and professional credibility.

The ability to build strong and productive relationships with colleagues at all levels of the organisation, including senior leaders and trustees.

Demonstrable ability to take clear decisions and to bring colleagues and institutions on board with these.

Ability to hold spaces and moments of fracture and conflict and support people to navigate through challenging and complex situations. 

Ability to use Salesforce, DHIS2 or other CRM, database or data capturing tools.
