The Geneva-based International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is a humanitarian organization that provides protection and assistance to people affected by armed conflict and other situations of violence. ICRC employs more than 20,000 staff and is present in 80 countries. The ICRC Regional Delegation in Pretoria is looking for a suitable candidate to fill the following vacancy:

 

 

Prevention Programme Officer

 

The Prevention Programme Officer supports the Delegation in its activities related to International Humanitarian Law. He/she initiates and formulates strategies to address identified issues and delegation objectives in the legal domain and conducts research and analysis on specific legally related matters to support the work of the Communications (COM), Armed Forces and Security (FAS), International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and Humanitarian Affairs/Political Affairs departments in the Delegation.

Description of the role:

 

The incumbent performs the following duties:

  1. Participates in Armed Forces and Security (FAS) engagement with military and police personnel including IHL/IHRL dissemination workshops.
  2. Maintains contact with relevant interlocutors and continuously updates the stakeholder mapping database.
  3. Contributes to report writing and evaluation of the impact of the Delegation’s IHL work in the countries covered by the ICRC delegation in Pretoria.
  4. Builds and maintains partnerships with universities in the countries covered by the ICRC delegation in Pretoria and encourages academic research in IHL.
  5. Supports prevention objectives broadly where legal advice or analysis is required, particularly regarding operational issues.  
  6. Drafting articles and contributions for the ICRC website about events, resources and, research   as well as drafting press releases and social media plans related to the various events hosted by the Delegation. 

Profile - Minimum required qualification & experience:

  1. Master’s degree in public international law or related field of law
  2. Good knowledge of International Humanitarian Law
  3. Fluent in spoken and written English
  4. 3-5 years of working relevant experience.
  5. Experience working in International Humanitarian Law is an asset.
  6. Confirmed analytical capacity.
  7. Excellent organizational skills
  8. Ability to work in a diverse team.
