  1. SUMMARY OF THE POSITION 

Doctors without Borders seeks to employ a suitable qualified Nurse Mentor to join the team in Butterworth. Providing robust onsite continuous training/ coaching/ mentoring and enhances supervision, supporting and enhancing high level problem solving, diagnostic, and decision-making skills, leading case discussions and addressing issues of quality assurance, as well providing consultations on complex cases  according to MSF nursing protocols, standards and procedures, in order to warrant efficiency , quality and continuity of prescribed care

 

2. OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Identify any possible competency gaps and other system-level issues that obstruct quality care delivery mainly in more remote health facilities where resources, including specialized training, medications, and equipment, are more limited

  • Together with NAM and PMR, analyse gaps and develop plan to address these in order to implement centers of excellence in NCD care in selected PHC facilities

  • Implement all nursing-related activities concerning the Differentiated Service Delivery (DSD) activities and programme

  • Develop and roll-out Mentorship strategy with leadership of NAM:

-  Work closely with the NAM in planning and rolling out the mentorship programme, as well as support the planning, implementation and evaluation of the mentorship workshops

- Provide guidance and share clinical experiences to help mentees gain confidence in de-tecting, diagnosing, treating, and providing long-term continuous management for patients with NCDs;

- Support the mentees to calculate minimal stock levels to avoid any drug stock outs/ensure that operational research pharmacy stock levels are constantly updated and are always above the minimum safety point

- The mentoring strategy will involve sitting next to the mentee during clinic hours and carrying out the mentoring during routine NCD consultations. Included in the one-on-one mentoring process will be the giving of small theoretical interactive teaching sessions to small groups of clinicians

  1. Support the decentralization of services including task shifting and task sharing strategies for NCDs from PHCs sentinel sites to ePuPs to ensure health care services are more accessible 

  2. Implement legal therapeutic protocols, procedures and standards of the DSD services and operational research planned according to MSF protocols and in collaboration with the DoH, EAM and PMR, supervising the distribution (according to medical prescriptions) and pharmacy activity, and supervising expiration terms and consumption patterns to mitigate against stockouts

  3. Work with the NAM to gather the data needed for operational research and programmatic analysis.

  4. Contribute to the Reporting where needed and quarterly reporting indicating the development and progress of the nurse mentorship

  5. Participate in meetings, seminars, conferences, workshops, and webinars in line with relevant nursing and community healthcare as contributing services to the universal health coverage and improvement of the person and people-oriented quality

  6. To adhere to the MSF charter and principles, and to promote a positive image of MSF through your professional attitude and behaviour;

  7. To refer to the supervisor where appropriate for guidance on clinical, administrative and strategic problems;

  8. Collaborate closely with MoH for the decision-making process and implementation of activities;

  9. Attend internal and external meetings representing the department as required by line supervisor/manager;

  10. Ability to work in close collaboration with other partners;

 

3. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

Education       : Essential: Grade 12 / Matric Certificate

                           : Essential: Nursing diploma: general or specialized health services and/ or Bachelor’s 

                             degree in Nursing Science

                           : Essential: Valid registration with the South African Nursing Council 

                           Desirable: Specialization or training in nursing education/mentorship and quality improvement

                             methodologies

  • Community Nursing or Primary Health Care Nursing

Experience      : Essential: Supporting Nursing Care Strategies, including Nurse Training /Mentorship program 

                              for at least 1 year

                            Essential: A minimum of 1-year consulting experience in South African primary care settings in the

                              management of chronic diseases

                           :  Desirable: Working in an MSF and DoH partnership context

  • Managing facility-based/Outreach Nursing team

  • previous experience in MSF or other NGOs in developing countries

                           : South African citizenship or valid work visa is a must    

Language           Essential: Fluent in English and ability to communicate in IsiXhosa (or other Nguni languages)
