Part-time driver: Butterworth Project

  1. SUMMARY OF THE POSITION   

  • Doctors without Borders seeks to employ a suitable qualified part-time driver that will perform the tasks of transporting authorized goods and passengers in an MSF vehicle, ensuring its technical and safety conditions and respecting the country's traffic rules and MSF security rules, in order to provide a safe, smooth and efficient service

2. OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES  

Driving

  • Safely and securely transports MSF staff and goods as required by MSF management

  • Ensures that the vehicle is parked safely in a designated parking near the office and the vehicle key is handed over to designated MSF staff member to be locked securely for the night

  • Fulfills all the assigned tasks to him/her with punctuality and precision. 

  • Not to leave the vehicle with goods unattended.

Maintenance 

  • Keeps the vehicle in excellent working condition at any time; notes any mechanical problems and damages in the logbook and reports to the Logistics Supervisor immediately

  • Carries out the daily check-ups and warns his/her supervisor about the approaching maintenance time for his/her vehicle

  • All vehicles must have at least half tank of fuel at all time

  • Fills up the vehicle with petrol/diesel, oil and water every Friday (or sooner if necessary)

  • The driver is responsible for the cleanliness of the vehicle. It should be cleaned at least once per week both inside and outside

  • Is responsible for the equipment in the vehicle including the spare tyre, Hands Free kit etc

Safety

  • Loads and unloads the vehicle correctly:

  • Participates and directs every loading and unloading of the vehicle 

  • Does not exceeds the maximum load of the vehicle

  • Balances the load equally in the vehicle

  • Secures the load correctly so that there is no risk for the passengers.

  • Ensures the Vehicle First Aid kit is present in the vehicle and stocked correctly as per the first aid inventory, and includes N95 Masks.

  • Under no circumstances transports people in the rear of a pick-up or a trailer

  • Strictly observes the national speed limits:

  • Always parks the vehicle in a safe, supervised area and engages all the locks before leaving the vehicle

  • Ensures the seat belts are worn by all passengers at all times, in the front as well as the back

  • It is strictly forbidden to consume any alcohol or drugs before or whilst driving

  • In case of an accident, contacts the Logistics Supervisor and Logistics Manager immediately

GENERAL

  • Any driver that is found to have caused damage to the vehicle through negligence will be held liable for the repair

  • Any driver who receives a speeding ticket will be held liable for the fine

  • The vehicles should be used for professional purposes only

  • Treats all MSF properties with due care and attention

  • According to the volume of work, these tasks may evolve and the driver should be available to carry out any other tasks assigned to him/her by his/her supervisor. These may include but not limited to the following:

GENERAL

  • The tasks listed above are not exhaustive. Flexibility is a qualification in a humanitarian aid organization, it may be asked of employees to perform tasks other than those listed in this Job description. According to the volume of work, these tasks may evolve, and the Driver should be available to carry out any other tasks assigned to him/her by his/her supervisor.

Education                     Essential Matric, driving license with PDP. Essential knowledge of Eastern Cape                                                  roads/areas

Experience          

Experience                  Essential 2 years minimum of previous driving Experience

                                           Desirable experience with 4x4 vehicles, driving with trailer. NGOs Experience

Languages                    English essential and isiXhosa preferable. Knowledge                                                                                                               Desirable knowledge of basic mechanics
